BBS (Behaviour Based Safety):

  • Full form of BBS is Behaviour Based Safety in lean manufacturing.
  • BBS (Behaviour Based Safety) was pioneered  by researchers in the United-States  in the 1970.
  • BBS is a proactive safety method.
  • BBS is the application of behavioral research on human performance to the problems of safety.
  • Systematic approach of BBS is to focus on identifying and reinforcing safe behaviours of employees to prevent injuries/accidents.
  • BBS focuses on observing, reinforcing, and identifying safe behaviours of workmans to avoid accidents at workplace.
  • In short, BBS is the application of science of behavior change to safety related problems.
  • Thus BBS is the proactive and data-driven approach to enhance workplace safety.


Steps of Effective BBS program:

1)Checklist monitoring: Frontline workers or supervisors use specific checklists to monitor daily job tasks for safe practices and risk areas.

2)Constructive feedback: Observers provide timely feedback to praise safe behaviors and correct risky ones.

3)Behavior analysis: Teams analyze data patterns to find the root causes (antecedents and consequences) of unsafe actions.

4)Continuous improvement: Management removes systemic barriers and uses positive reinforcement to build safe habits.
