Equipment Safety

Equipment Safety :

The protections used at workstation so as to avoid danger for human body that is workmen along with the equipment and leading to safe work is termed as equipment safety.

Equipment safety is important for long life of workmen and so as equipment by avoiding accidents at workstation during processes.

Thus equipment safety becomes valuable in manufacturing industry.

Following factors are important to confirm equipment safety:

1. Make sure that the equipment is safe for any work.

 2. Make sure that the equipment is safe for carrying out breakdowns repairs, and preventive or planned maintenance.

3. Make sure the equipment is properly switched off, isolated or locked-off before taking any action to remove blockages.

4. Make sure that the equipment is with no risk of electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic power supplies.

5. Make sure that equipment is with no badly designed safeguards.

6. Ensure No sharp edges or corners associated with equipment.

7. Check that the equipment is with all safeguards fitted, and free from defects.

8. Safe system of work for using and maintaining the equipment as-

The residual risks must be identified by the manufacturer in the information/ instructions provided with the equipment.

Note that new equipments are with Declaration of Conformity and Instructions.

Measures to prevent access to dangerous parts :

  • Use of Fixed safety guards to enclose the dangerous parts and moving parts of the equipment.
  • Use of transperant plastic or acrylic sheet guards or wire mesh guards when possible for visual control.
  • Use of interlocking of the safety guard so that the machine cannot start before the guard is closed and cannot be opened while the machine is moving.
  • Trip systems like photoelectric devices, or automatic guards may be used if mechanical guards are not usable.
  • Use jigs, holders, push sticks etc. where guards are not enough for protection.
  • Use emergency stop controls where necessary and are should be easily reachable.
  • Use of control buttons which are easily accessible and with clear markings or notification.
  • Use of safety latch buttons, push buttons etc.
  • Use of programmable safety switches.
  • Use pedal switches whenever possible.
  • Use two handed Operating Controls whenever necessory.
  • Use of logical controls when possible.
  • Use of sensors where no mechanical obstructions are possible for providing safety.
  • Most important is Cleaned work area around the machine and free from obstructions for operator's movement.

Do's for Equipment safety for workers:

1.Check whether the machine is well maintained and fit for use.
2.Check for all the safety measures like guard, isolators, locking mechanisms, emergency off switches etc.
3.Make sure workers are wearing the appropriate protective clothing.
4.Check the PPE's  required for working on the machine, such as ear plugs, safety goggles, safety shoes, hand gloves,Safety helmet etc.
5.Use the machine properly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Dont's For Equipment Safety for Workers:

  • Don't Use equipment that has a Danger Sign or Tag attached to it.
  • Don't Wear dangling chains, loose clothing.
  • Dont remove Danger signs. Danger signs should only be removed by an authorised person only.
